Emergency Services

Dental Emergencies:

  • Toothache: Clean the area of the affected tooth. Rinse the mouth thoroughly with warm water or use dental floss to dislodge any food that may be impacted. If the pain still exists, give us a call. Do not place aspirin or heat on the gum or aching tooth. If there is any facial swelling, apply a cold compress and contact us immediately!

  • Cut or bitten tongue, lip or cheek: Apply ice to the injured area to control the swelling. If any bleeding occurs, apply pressure with a clean cloth. If you cannot control the bleeding by simple pressure proceed to the emergency room or contact your doctor.

  • Knocked Out Permanent Tooth: Find the tooth if you can. Do not pick it up by the root. Handle the tooth by the crown ONLY! DO NOT clean the tooth with soap, but you may rinse carefully with water. DO NOT handle the unnecessarily handle the tooth, touch it as little as possible. Inspect it for breaks or fractures. If the tooth is in one piece with no fractures, you may attempt to reinsert the tooth. The best thing to do is transport the tooth is a cup containing either the patient's saliva or milk, NOT water. The patient must come in IMMEDIATELY. Time is crucial in saving a tooth.

  • Knocked Out Baby Tooth: If your child has a baby tooth knocked out, give us a call. There will likely be no treatment. Unlike a permanent tooth, baby teeth should not be replanted. It can cause damage to the developing permanent tooth to replant a baby tooth.

  • Chipped/Fractured Permanent Tooth: Time is a critical factor if your child chips or fractures their permanent tooth. Contact us immediately so that we can reduce the chance of infection or the need for future extensive dental treatment. Rinse the mouth with water and apply a cold compress if there is swelling. If you can find the broken piece, bring it with you!

  • Chipped/Fractured Baby Tooth: Contact us.

  • Severe Blow to the Head: Go to the nearest emergency room immediately or call 911. We will not see a patient for this, they will need to be seen by an emergency medicine professional!

  • Possible Broken or Fractured Jaw: Keep the jaw from moving and proceed to the nearest emergency room!
