Prevention

Sealants

Sealants are a protective coating that we apply to the grooves, or chewing surfaces of the premolars and molars (back teeth) Four out of five cavities are found in the back teeth, sealant acts as a barrier to food, plaque and acid, protecting the parts of your teeth prone to decay.

Cavity Prevention

Good oral hygiene removes the bacteria and left over food particles that work together to form cavities. For infants, use a clean washcloth that you have gotten wet to wipe the plaque from the teeth and gums. Try to avoid putting your child to bed with a bottle filled with anything other than water.

For older children, brush their teeth at least twice a day. Watch the number of sugar containing snacks that your children consume.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends visits every six months to the pediatric dentist. These visits should begin at your child's first birthday. Routine visits will help your child start on a lifetime of good dental health.

Athletic Mouth Guards

We know how much kids enjoy the extra curricular and recreational activities. We also know that injuries are very common in organized sports. A properly fitted mouth protector is a vital piece of athletic gear that will help protect your child's smile during organized sporting activities.

Mouth Protectors help to prevent broken teeth and injuries to lips, tongue, face and jaw. To make it easier for your child to talk and breathe while using a mouth protector, make sure that the mouth protecting is properly fitted.

We can discuss the options of custom and store-bought mouth protectors!

Brushing Tips

  • Start at birth. Clean your child's gums with water and a soft cloth
  • Brush your child's teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush as soon as the teeth erupt from the gums.
  • If they are under two years old, use a small "smear" of toothpaste.
  • If they are between two and five, use a "pea-size" amount of toothpaste.
  • Use an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste, but make sure that your child doesn't swallow the toothpaste.
  • Parents should brush the child's teeth until they are old enough to do a good job on their own.

Flossing Tips

  • Flossing removes the plaque between the teeth and under with gumline. Plaque between teeth and under the gumline cannot be reached by a toothbrush.
  • Flossing should start as soon as your child has any of two teeth that touch.
  • Make sure to floss your child's teeth daily until he or she can do it alone.
